One of the asset management industry's two top cops is about to leave his post.

Anthony S. Kelly Securities and Exchange Commission Co-Chief, Asset Management Unit — Division of Enforcement

Anthony Kelly, co-chief of the asset management unit in the Securities and Exchange Commission's (SEC's) enforcement division, will leave the regulatory agency this month, confirms Stephanie Avakian and Steven Peikin, co-directors of the division. Dabney O'Riordan, the other co-chief of the enforcement division's asset management unit, will continue to lead the unit when Kelly leaves.

An alumnus of George Washington University and of Georgetown Law, Kelly has spent his entire career so far (more than 18 years) at the SEC. He joined in 2000 as a securities compliance examiner in the broker-dealer group of the office of compliance inspections and examinations (OCIE). Over the years he served as senior counsel in the enforcement division, special counsel in the office of trading practices in the trading and markets division, and assistant director of the enforcement division's asset management unit. He rose to co-chief of the enforcement division's asset management unit in 2016.

A variety of mutual fund industry investigations and enforcement actions came out of the enforcement division's asset management under Kelly's watch, including the "Distribution-in-Guise" initiative and fallout from the F-Squared scandal.

Avakian lauds Kelly as "a consummate leader and mentor" who applies "thoughtfulness and fairness on matters within the fund industry."
