Bridge Builder Wins Again But Midsize Outflows Rise By $7.5B

A B-D's subadvised fund family kept the lead last month among midsized fund firms, even as the group's net outflows nearly quadrupled, according to the latest data from the folks at a publicly traded investment research firm.

This article draws from Morningstar Direct data on April 2025 mutual fund and ETF flows, excluding money market funds and funds of funds. (Other asset management products, like CITs and separate accounts, are also not included.) More specifically, this article focuses on the 210 firms (down by one month-over-month from March 2025 and down by three year-over-year from April 2024) with between 10 and 99 long-term mutual funds or ETFs each.

Edward Jones' Bridge Builder led the pack for a second month in a row, thanks to an estimated $918 million in net April 2025 inflows, down by $1.084 billion M/M from March 2025 but up by $2.902 billion Y/Y from April 2024. Other big April 2025 inflows winners included:
  • First Eagle, $521 million (down by $96 million M/M, up by $605 million Y/Y);
  • F/m (including North Slope), $453 million (up by $47 million M/M, up by $169 million Y/Y);
  • Baird (including Strategas), $386 million (up by $175 million M/M, down by $1.927 billion Y/Y); and
  • Tuttle, $378 million (up by $61 million M/M, up by $306 million Y/Y).

  • Baird led the inflows pack over the last year, thanks to an estimated $16.008 billion in net inflows for the trailing twelve months ending April 30, 2025. Other big TTM inflows winners included: Bridge Builder, $13.958 billion; and GQG, $5.662 billion.

    On the flip side, Pacer took the outflows lead last month, thanks to an estimated $1.799 billion in net April 2025 outflows, up by $874 million M/M from March 2025 and a $3.599-billion net flows drop Y/Y from April 2024. Other big April 2025 outflows sufferers included:
  • KraneShares, $1.668 billion (up by $1.368 billion M/M, up by $1.434 billion Y/Y);
  • Bessemer's Old Westbury, $1.334 billion (up by $1.238 billion M/M, up by $982 million Y/Y);
  • Dodge & Cox, $951 million (up by $294 million M/M, a $1.091-billion net flows drop Y/Y); and
  • DoubleLine, $642 million (down by $40 million M/M, down by $134 million Y/Y).

  • Grayscale led the outflows pack over the last year, thanks to an estimated $8.155 billion in TTM outflows as of April 30, 2025. Other big outflows sufferers included: Jensen, $4.181 billion; and Baron, $3.863 billion.

    As a group, midsize fund firms suffered $10.147 billion in net April 2025 outflows (up by $7.455 billion M/M and up by $9.331 billion Y/Y). Midsize firms accounted for 22.4 percent of industry outflows last month. As of April 30, 2025, midsize firms held $1.736 trillion in AUM (5.8 percent of industry AUM) across 5,925 funds (13.6 percent of industry funds) and accounted for 27.7 percent of all fund firms.

    Midsize firms brought in $34.668 billion in TTM inflows as of April 30, 2025. They accounted for 5.3 percent of overall industry inflows over that period.

    Across the whole industry, the 758 fund firms tracked by the M* team suffered $45.293 billion in net April 2025 outflows, a $69.196-billion net flows drop M/M but up by $36.284 billion Y/Y. It was the industry's first monthly outflows since April 2024.

    As of April 30, 2025, the industry had $30.183 trillion in AUM (up by $24 billion M/M and up by $2.677 triillion Y/Y) across 43,525 funds (up by 54 M/M, up by 792 Y/Y).

    The industry brought in $656.261 billon in TTM inflows as of April 30, 2025.
