John McStay, a former CEO of Mercantile Securities Corp., founded John McStay Investment Counsel in 1983. The advisory firm then established Brazos Mutual Funds as its mutual fund arm in 1996.
AIG acquired McStay and the Brazos Mutual Funds in 1999. On March 26, 2010 AIG sold a stake in the funds to Cayman Islands-based Bridge Partners, L.P. (itself controlled by Asia-based Pacific Century Group and in turn controlled by Hong Kong investor Richard Li Tzar Kai). The funds rebranded as PineBridge Mutual Funds in March of 2010.
The PineBridge brand is a portmanteau of the fund advisor's address on Pine Street in New York and its new owner Bridge Partners.
