A Private Equity Alum Takes Over Strategic Insight's Parent

A private equity alumnus is taking over the parent company of Strategic Insight.

Today, Joel Mandelbaum confirms that he has been hired as president and CEO of Asset International (AI). He most recently served as entrepreneur in residence at Warburg Pincus and previously held top jobs at Wall Street Systems, Financial Sciences Corporation, Thomson Market Information Services, and Dalcomp.

AI's previous CEO, Jim Casella, stepped down this spring. At the time Casella was slated to remain on as executive chairman through the end of 2016.

San Francisco-based private equity shop Genstar Capital bought AI a year ago. At the time, Genstar principal Tony Salewski told MFWire that he planned to keep Strategic Insight co-founder Avi Nachmany, AI founder Charlie Ruffel, and Casella on board.

Casella first took over AI more than six years ago, when Austin Ventures bought AI. He had been CEO of Austin's own Case Interactive media.

In addition to mutual fund research and data specialist Strategic Insight, AI also includes the publications Global Custodian, PlanAdviser, and PlanSponsor. AI bought Strategic Insight in 2009.

Salewski puts Mandelbaum's hiring in the context of "the next phase of [AI's] evolution ... through an acceleration of organic, acquisition and internal startup-based growth."
