Are ETF Launches About to Get Easier?

It may soon be easier to launch some ETFs, according to a Reuters report.

The SEC is considering bringing back a proposal from March 2008 that would make it easier to launch a simple ETF, like one that tracks the S&P 500, according to reporter Sarah N. Lynch.

The plan was previously scrapped when the financial crisis distracted the SEC.

The plan could save time and money by streamlining the application process.

"That would help issuers and their sponsors because they wouldn't have to incur the costs to file exemptive applications with us," said Norm Champ, the director of the SEC's Investment Management Division, to Reuters.
