Does the Vanguard TIPS Fund Represent a Change in Strategy?

Marketwatch thinks Vanguard's [profile] fans may like the firm's new TIPS ETF, but says it deviates from the investment strategy that the mutual fund manager claims works best in the specific market.

The story starts by comparing the excitement the fund generated among fundsters to the euphoria often seen when Apple launches a new handheld gizmo.

The Vanguard Short-Term TIPS Index Fund is cheap, though the report says investors should note that until recently, Vanguard used a different strategy for TIPS. Kenneth Volpert, head of Vanguard's taxable bond group, says that although active ETFs used to be the right move, "indexing makes more sense now."
