Chertoff Says No to SEC

The Bush administration was close to naming Michael Chertoff as its candidate to replace Harvey Pitt at the SEC, but backed away from the nomination late yesterday, reports the New York Times.

Chertoff reportedly dined at the White House for lunch yesterday on "short notice".

The paper said it was not clear whether the decision was Chertoff's or the Administration's. Chertoff is currently the assistant attorney general in charge of the criminal division at the Justice Department.
