Dotcom Fund Superstars: Where are They Now?

A decade after the dotcom bubble burst, MarketWatch's Jonathan Burton penned a "Where are they now" article featuring the Internet fund stars of yore: Garrett Van Wagoner of Van Wagoner Emerging Growth Fund, Kevin Landis of Firsthand Technology Value Fund, Ryan Jacob of the Jacob Internet Fund and Alberto Vilar of Amerindo Technology Fund.

Landis and Jacob continue to run technology funds, while Van Wagoner has left the mutual fund business. As for Vilar, he and his Amerindo Technology Fund co-manager Gary Tanaka were charged in May 2005 with stealing from investors in Amerindo Investment Advisors. The two were convicted in November 2008. Last month, a Manhattan judge sentenced Vilar to nine years in prison and Tanaka to five years.

Asked if he would do anything differently, looking back at the Internet boom, Landis replied: "I think I could have been less dogmatic about buying and holding some of these companies. Now I want to be more flexible and more adaptable to the environment without throwing out my basic investment philosophy."

Commenting on the Jacob Internet Fund, Jacob told Burton: "This is a volatile, high-risk fund. "The reality is that you can go through periods that if you don't have the stomach for it can be very painful. I never expected the boom to be quite as large and I never expected the crash to be as bad as it was."
