Northern Trust Taps a Global Sales Chief


There was a changing of the guard last Friday at Chicago-based Northern Trust, as Alan Robertson was named global head of sales and service for Northern Trust Global Investments (NTGI), the firm's investment management arm. Meanwhile, Joseph McInerney stepped into Robertson's old shoes as CEO and president of the advisory arm –- Northern Trust Global Advisors (NTGA).

Robertson, who will be based in Chicago, will now report to Stephen Potter, the President of NTGI. Since 2007, Robertson has served as President and CEO of Northern Trust Global Advisors –- the role that McInerney will now fill. An 11-year Northern Trust veteran, Robertson previously held positions including group head of wealth advisory services and managing director, NTGI product management, marketing, operations and technology, where he developed and managed the company's investment management products.

For his part, McInerney served since 2005 as COO of Northern Trust's advisory operations (NTGA), overseeing daily operations and administration processes and the development of infrastructure, technology, operations, and strategy. McInerney, who will be based in Stamford, Connecticut, will report to Robertson. Before becoming COO of NTGA, McInerney held a number of roles at Northern Trust including Senior Product manager for alternative investments and head of the audit group responsible for the company's treasury and investment management functions. Prior to joining Northern Trust, McInerney was a Senior Bank Examiner for the State of Illinois Office of Banks and Real Estate.

CHICAGO, Jan. 22 /PRNewswire-FirstCall/ -- Northern Trust announced today that Alan Robertson has been appointed Global Head, Sales and Service, for Northern Trust Global Investments (NTGI), the multi-asset class investment management business of Northern Trust Corporation. In this newly-created position, Robertson will oversee sales, client service and product management in all regions and align resources more explicitly with NTGI's personal and institutional distribution channels.

Robertson is based in Chicago and reports directly to Stephen N. Potter, president of NTGI. Since 2007, Robertson has been CEO and President of Northern Trust Global Advisors (NTGA), the multi-manager arm of Northern Trust Corp. Joseph McInerney, who has been chief operating officer of NTGA, was promoted to President and CEO, succeeding Robertson. McInerney is based in Stamford, Conn., and reports to Robertson.

Robertson has held a number of senior roles since joining Northern Trust 11 years ago. Before leading NTGA, he served as group head, wealth advisory services, in Northern Trust's Personal Financial Services business. Previously, he was managing director, NTGI product management, marketing, and operations and technology, responsible for developing and managing the full array of Northern Trust's investment management products. Prior to joining Northern Trust, Robertson held various senior positions in the investment management business. He earned a B.A. degree with honors in international relations from Eisenhower College and an M.B.A. degree from The Darden Graduate School of Business at the University of Virginia.

Previously, he led the audit group responsible for the oversight of the treasury and investment management functions of the Northern Trust Corporation. Before joining Northern Trust, he was a Senior Bank Examiner for the State of Illinois Office of Banks and Real Estate. He holds an MBA with a concentration in Finance from DePaul University and a BA from Northern Illinois University.
