Q2 Review: Commodity Funds Were Winners

Tuesday's WSJ Fund Track, penned by Jonathan Burton lauds those in the fund industry for making it through a rough second quarter. Burton writes that diversified U.S. stock funds posted an anemic 0.6 percent gain for the second quarter, and a loss of 9.7 percent for the first half of 2008. Burton then gives a fact well-known to fundies: if you weren't in commodities or natural resources, you weren't making money. Portfolio managers that Burton tapped to talk about the growing areas included: Alex Motola, manager of the Thornburg Core Growth Fund; David Kelly, chief market strategist at PMorgan Funds; and Doug Couden, manager of the Phoenix Strategic Growth Fund.
