ProFunds Stadium? Deal for Nats’ Home Naming Rights Near

by: Sean Hanna, Editor in Chief

ProFunds execs may want to tip their caps to Senator John W. Warner. Thanks to the Senator, ProFunds appears to be the sole bidder standing for the naming rights to Washington's RFK Stadium. The stadium is the current of the Washington Nationals baseball club and Major League Soccer's DC United teams.

The Bethesda, Maryland fund firm became the last bidder standing after the National Guard dropped out of the bidding, according to the Baltimore Sun. Earlier, Senator Warner had questioned whether spending funds on a stadium naming deal would be an appropriate use of the guard's resources during wartime.

The paper reports that the D.C. Sports & Entertainment Commission, the entity auctioning the stadium's naming rights, would not comment on the value of the contract.

"We've been trading numbers," Tony Robinson, a spokesperson for the commission told the paper. "A final agreement is fairly imminent, but we can't say for sure until the ink is dry."

The deal for the naming rights for what is now called Robert F. Kennedy Memorial Stadium will only last until the Nationals move into a newly built stadium in 2008. Ground has not yet been broken on the new stadium.

It is also not clear how clear a message ProFunds will be purchasing. The Sun quotes Lynn Delaney, executive director of the Robert F. Kennedy Memorial, as telling it that the commission assured the Kennedy family that the corporate name would be an add-on to the RFK name and would not replace it.
