Hayes to Leave Janus Board

by: Sean Hanna, Editor in Chief

Helen Young Hayes is cutting her remaining official ties to Janus Capital Group. The Denver-based firm said Tuesday that the one-time fund manager and chief investment officer will leave the Janus board of directors when her term expires in May.

Hayes unexpectedly retired from her day-to-day duties at the firm last year.

Janus officials also announced that it will add to new directors to the board. The newly elected directors include Michael D. Bills and Deborah R. Gatzek. The Janus board includes 10 directors, seven of whom are independent.

Bills is founder of Bluestem Asset Management and a visiting scholar at McIntire School of Commerce at the University of Virginia. He has spent more than 20 years in the asset management industry and was the chief investment officer for the University of Virginia's $2 billion endowment. He was also a senior managing director and chief operating officer of Tiger Management. He began his investment career at Goldman Sachs in 1981.

Gatzek has served as a corporate and investment advisory legal counselor for more than 20 years. From 1983 until 2000, she was senior vice president and a member of the executive committee of Franklin Resources, Inc. and its subsidiaries and the Franklin, Templeton and Mutual Series Funds. Gatzek was most recently Chief Counsel of ING Americas mutual fund practice. She also served as Special Counsel in the Division of Enforcement at the Securities and Exchange Commission and regional counsel with the National Association of Securities Dealers, Inc. (NASD).
