Reynolds Bolsters Another Side of Putnam's Retirement Business

Reported by Tommy Fernandez

Bob Reynolds has invested a lot in Putnam's [profile] bundled retirement plan business. Today he and his team unveiled a big push in another part of its retirement plan business, defined contribution investment only (DC I-O) work that involves Putnam offering specific investment options inside other providers' retirement plans.

Reynolds is beefing up Putnam's DC I-O business with a new website and other goodies. The website, now live at www.putnam.com/dcio, will provide DC-focused content and advice to consultants and advisors.

Tools featured on this site include:
  • Links to Putnam Fund Visualizer, an investment analytics tool that allows research and advisors to compare funds and model portfolios as well as plan investment menus, will be available on the site early next year,
  • Detailed product profiles, commentaries, and fact sheets on over 30 funds and Putnam's collective trusts, including Putnam Stable Value and Putnam Retirement Advantage target-date series,
  • Putnam's quarterly market trends book, which brings charts and graphs for investment professionals to use with clients,
  • Sector insights and analyst commentary on key industries and market sectors, directly from Putnam's investment managers and research analysts, and,
  • Weekly economic updates and monthly market summaries.
"What we are really trying to do is find the right content to help advisors and consultants and package all of our thought leadership on a single site," Peter Whitman, head of DCIO at Putnam, told 401kWire. "This is a way for our clients to access our thought leadership and best practice ideas via a single portal."

PUTNAM INVESTMENTS TO LAUNCH EXPANDED WEB PRESENCE FOR DEFINED CONTRIBUTION INVESTMENT-ONLY BUSINESS

    -----

Move is Part of Broader Build-Out of Firm’s DCIO Efforts in Marketplace

BOSTON, December 17, 2012 – Putnam Investments announced today that it has created a new, dedicated Defined Contribution Investment-Only (DCIO) web site that captures the content most requested by consultants, recordkeeping firms and investment research professionals, in a simple and intuitive format. The site, which is currently live and located at www.putnam.com/dcio, is one element of a more expansive effort by Putnam, which has included adding industry talent and offering new retirement share classes on many of its funds, to further bolster its presence in the growing DCIO marketplace.

"There is an enormous opportunity to provide investment-only services and thought leadership to the retirement market in the coming years, given demographic trends, changing regulatory environment and demand for new solutions," said Edmund Murphy, Head of Defined Contribution, Putnam Investments. Murphy pointed to research reported earlier this year by Strategic Insight, which indicated that the DCIO market is set to grow to 60% of total DC assets by 2017, up from an estimated 52% at year-end 2011.

Murphy added, "We believe that Putnam is extremely well-positioned to increasingly serve this market and build upon its solid DCIO foundation, formed through the combination of knowledgeable talent, a wide array of product and pricing options appropriate for today’s 4o1(k) plans – and now, through our new web site, industry-leading analytic tools."

Currently, Putnam manages approximately $11B for DCIO clients.

The new Putnam DCIO web site will include a variety of timely educational materials, including:

  • Links to the award-winning Putnam Fund Visualizer, an investment analytics tool that allows research and advisors to compare funds and model portfolios as well as plan investment menus, will be available on the site early next year,

"We are pleased to introduce a new experience specifically designed for the investment-only marketplace," said Peter Whitman, Head of DCIO at Putnam Investments. "In recognizing this important growth area for the retirement marketplace, Putnam seeks to make available its best thinking and resources to serve advisors, consultants, and recordkeepers, and hopes to contribute deep insight and information to their decision-making process."

    2012 Build-Out of Putnam’s DCIO Business

Earlier this year, Putnam announced the launch of two new share classes – R5 and R6 - to allow qualified retirement plan sponsors to separate investment management fees from recordkeeping and administrative fees for their plan participants. The move is part of a continuing effort by the firm to provide the retirement plan marketplace with new levels of transparency and flexibility.

Also, in 2012, Putnam added dedicated DCIO relationship managers, including one professional focused exclusively on addressing the needs of consultants. Whitman indicated that the firm’s DCIO business will continue to add to staff in 2013, in response to growing interest in Putnam’s offerings.
