Hatteras Promotes for Alternative Funds CIO

Hatteras Funds has looked to within to find a new CIO for its alternative funds business.

Bob Murphy, who has been with the Raleigh, North Carolina-based shop since 2009, will take on the chief investment job while continuing to serve as risk management director and co-PMing Hatteras Alternative Mutual Funds.

Before he joined Hatteras, Murphy worked with Ivy Asset Management.

Hatteras Funds Names Robert Murphy Chief Investment Officer of the Hatteras Alternative Mutual Funds

Will Continue as Co-Portfolio Manager of the Funds

RALEIGH, N.C. – August 20, 2012 – Hatteras Funds (“Hatteras”), a boutique alternative investment specialist providing unique alternative investment solutions for financial advisors and their clients, announced that Robert J. Murphy, CFA, FRM, CAIA, has been promoted to Chief Investment Officer of the Hatteras Alternative Mutual Funds. In this role he is responsible for leadership and strategic direction of the investment team, in addition to his continued role as Director of Risk Management. Mr. Murphy continues to serve as Co-Portfolio Manager of the Hatteras Alternative Mutual Funds, alongside Mike Hennen.

Hatteras Funds manages several liquid alternative mutual funds including Hatteras Alpha Hedged Strategies Fund (ALPHX, ALPIX), a multi-strategy, multi-manager fund offering daily liquidity and position level transparency. Additionally, Hatteras Funds manages several single-strategy, multimanager alternative mutual funds including Hatteras Long/Short Equity Fund (HLSAX, HLSIX) and Hatteras Long/Short Debt Fund (HFIAX, HFINX).

Prior to joining Hatteras in 2009, Mr. Murphy was with Ivy Asset Management Corp. LLC, a division of BNY Mellon Asset Management, where he served as a Managing Director in the Investments Group and in the Investment Products and Strategy Group.  In this role he was responsible for investment research, assisted product development and portfolio management. He was also previously a Partner and Director of Risk Management at Meridian Capital Partners and held senior fixed income investment banking positions with A.G. Edwards, Cowen & Company, Donaldson, Lufkin & Jenrette, and Bear Stearns & Co., Inc.

Mr. Murphy received his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Business Administration degrees from the State University of New York at Albany. He earned his designation as a Chartered Financial Analyst (CFA) and has also earned designations as a Financial Risk Manager (FRM) and Chartered Alternative Investment Analyst (CAIA).
