Pricey Sector ETFs are Weighing on the Average

by: Erin Kello

Expensive new sector ETFs are pulling up the average price for all ETFs. Citing Morningstar research, the WSJ's Eleanor Laise reports that the average ETF now costs 54 bps, up from 41 bps a year ago. Laise says this is because so-called sector ETFs, such as the HealthShares European Medical Products and Devices ETF and the UltraShort Dow30 ProShares ETF, both of which charge 95 bps, raise the average. Broadly focused ETFs such as the Vanguard Total Stock Market ETF, costing a paltry 7 bps, are still cheap, Laise says.
