Promotion Time for a Fund Probe Leader?

by: Sean Hanna, Editor in Chief

Mark Schonfeld, the man at the SEC coordinating its probes into the mutual fund industry, may be in for a promotion. Dow Jones Newswires reported Monday that Schonfeld is one of two candidates being considered to head the SEC's Northeast regional office.

According to the news service, Stephen Cutler, SEC enforcement division director, may announce the appointment "within weeks." The post opened when Wayne Carlin left the SEC to join Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz in January.

Schonfeld is currently an associate director with the SEC based in downtown Manhattan. The second candidate for the job is reportedly Steven Peikin, a federal prosecutor in Manhattan who handled the retrial of Credit Suisse First Boston Corp.'s Frank Quattrone.

Schonfeld graduated from Harvard Law School in 1988 and served as a law clerk on the Second Circuit U.S. Court of Appeals. He then joined Testa, Hurwitz & Thibeault in Boston as a litigation associate before signing on as an SEC enforcement attorney in 1996

At the SEC, Schonfeld led the settlement settlement with Alliance Capital Management.
